Boundary Walk 09
17th June 2021. Starting from Pobgreen, Running Hill Gate, Uppermill, Oldham.
Latitude: 53.563909 | Longitude: -1.983288
Today we wanted to join two pieces of the boundary that we had walked previously. We followed the boundary along the road of Running Hill Gate, and then after a sharp left we found a footpath between a few houses that led us down to Back o’ th Lee. The boundary can feel very different over a short distance.
Constrained between dwellings one moment and then disappearing with no clear features the next. We were guided by the Boundary Walk markers on gate posts, which informed us which side of the wall or field we should be heading. We have been thinking about how a mark on map translates physically to where we are walking. We were told by the PDNPA planning dept that the pink shaded area of the boundary line equates to around 30m on the ground.
As we moved down we joined the a raised track, with a gully to one side. This clearly marked the boundary and led to the road where we crossed on Walk 08. On the road side we were greeted by a figurative sculpture. We later found out that they used to be a pair of sculptures placed there by a local resident who collected antiquities. Rumour has it that the remaining piece ‘moves’ from time to time, to a new location along the boundary.
